My Home is My Heart

Home is a feeling, not a place. Home is my true safe space. Being with my family, that’s all that matters, Together at my cabin, right by the waters. Recalling past memories, creating more, In one place we all adore. Hearing the golf my dad’s watching, Getting breakfast because I’m starving! Home is laughing so hard we’re shaking, With my mom, playing scrabble, or baking. Fishing on our lake, among water ripples, Trying to forget my seasonal sniffles. My dog’s constant bark at squirrels in trees, Feeling a nice, gentle, warm summer breeze. My sister spouting random facts about sloths, And dad saying they should be extinct to annoy her a lot. My grandpa showing me deer photos, The long, green grass that grows. Walking in our forest and feeling peace, Where all worries cease. We’re our best and true selves Where family is above all else. Leaving my food where my dog won’t eat, Always counting on a comforting greet. Laughing at silly things my younger cousins say, Going out to swim and play. Lounging in my hammock, reading a book, Smelling the fresh, sweet, spicy dinner as my mom cooks. Eating the fresh walleye we caught that day, Always wanting to stay. The soft yet prickly grass as I run through our yard, My dad smiling, reading his birthday card. Hiking through our forest to Minnow Lake, When I leave I feel an ache. Tight hugs of my parents and comforting words, Helping my grandma feed hummingbirds. Home is laughter, happiness, and safety Swimming in our clear, blue lake daily. The place I’m truly grateful for, Cherishing every second, never bored. Where you never have to jump through hoops, Home is my true safe group.
