Ava's New Home

My name is Ava Smith. I live with my brother, Aaron, my mother and father. We live in a home in America ... well until today. I wake up to the smell of bacon cooking. I come downstairs to see Aaron and dad eating. “We have some exciting news,” Mom says. “In two weeks we're going to move to a house in Canada for my new job,.” Dad states. My mind completely freezes. “WHAT!!! But I don’t wanna!” Aaron yells, “Canada’s freezing! Everyone there lives in igloos!” “That’s not true,” Mom says. I'm trying really hard not to cry but I can’t help it. I must look pitiful with tears streaming down my face. I run upstairs to my room. Why would my parents ruin my favorite bacon’ n eggs breakfast? Two weeks have passed and we’ve arrived at our house in Canada. This house is not new and is a lot smaller than our old house. Someone probably lived in it before. It has one floor and no stairs like our old home. I know I must unpack but I look around. Mom can tell that I’m sad. Mom looks at me and says, “It’s okay to be sad, change is scary. This is just a house, we’re the ones who make it home. Home is where we establish a sense of who we are and where we fit in the world.” Mom is right, I feel better. School is starting. I stand at the doors of the school feeling tight in the stomach. A girl with brown hair walks next to me. She looks nervous too. I introduce myself, she does too. Her name is Charlotte. She's the same age as me and also moved to Canada this summer. I think things will get better and better from here.
