What is Home?
A house is a place with objects and space, a home is not a place, it’s a location where there’s love and grace. Houses have empty cracks that cannot be filled, homes are filled with emotion that spill and overfill. Houses have cold brick walls, but a home is a place where the “little things” aren’t so small. No matter what tradition you celebrate or what memories you and your family share, home is where the people are, where they show they truly care. Homes have family photos that took hours to get ready for, where my mom put my hair into beautiful braids so I could feel extra pretty that day. Houses have a tense feeling in the air that makes it hard for you not to feel despair. When you’re with family, the air isn’t tense, it smells like your dad’s cologne or your sister’s brand-new silky dress. Houses leave you to roam the empty halls, waiting for someone to tell you your feelings matter, homes have your favourite foods stacked on one platter. Thank you, Habitat for Humanity for supplying people in need with accessible, good quality houses that they can make a home.
