Home is where i can be the best version of myself
Home is not just about the house but a place to be safe and loved. My story shows that Home is all about family.
My name is Viktor. I am originally from Nigeria. I am from a single family (my mother and me). After I lost my grandmother from kidney failure, my mother took care of me in the best way she could. She is my world.
When my mom traveled, she put me in a boarding school. I had friends there, but it did not feel like home. Something was missing.
I was missing love, hugs, the aroma of food, laughter, and the best version of myself. I felt lonely and alone. Yes, it was a house, a building with windows and doors, but it was missing something special, what might it be?
One day, my mom came back for me, and we moved to Canada.
At first, we stayed in a motel. Although the environment felt scary and unsafe, my mom was with me so, I felt safe.
Everything changed when we got our place. It is not yet furnished, but it is our home.
One day, there was a snowstorm. I looked out the window and saw the wind was blowing heavily. But this time, I was not scared. I felt safe watching the snow from my room. I smiled.
Now, I can play, place my drawings on the wall, join my mom in cooking, and be the best version of myself.
Home is me. Home is love. Home is family.
Thank you to everyone in the Habitat for Humanity family for putting smiles on people's faces and making them find lost hope.
