My new Home
Before 2022 my home was a place in Ukraine. It was filled with the smell of my mom’s cooking and the sound of my friends playing outside. I had my own room and my favorite toys. But then the war started. Everything changed very fast. We had to leave with only one backpack. I had to say goodbye to my toys and my home.
When we moved to Halifax Canada I felt lost. The city is beautiful but everything was so different. I missed my friends my toys and my house. I used to think that home was just a building where you live. I thought if you lose the building you lose the home.
But living here in Halifax taught me something important. One night we were sitting in our new living room. It was very quiet outside. There were no scary sirens or loud noises like explosion. We were drinking tea and my dad was telling a joke. I looked at my parents and realized that I felt warm inside.
I learned that home travels with you. It isn’t just made of bricks or wood. Home is the feeling of my mom’s hand in mine when we walk to school. It is the peace of being able to sleep all night without being afraid.
Ukraine will always be in my heart but Halifax is my home now too because it gave us safety. To me home means a place where my family is together. Where we can dream about the future and where I don’t have to run anymore. Home is wherever I am loved.
