Being new to Canada
I wrote this perspective by interviewing my parents who at one point were Newcomers to Canada.
The home where I lived now changed from where we began.
I was born in the England. My first home was living in a room with my brother and my parents, sharing the areas of the kitchen, bathroom and living area.
We then immigrated to Canada as Newcomers, where we lived in again a room sharing the above. We then had two weeks in which we had to find a place to stay.
We found a basement and rented. Eventually my parents were able to buy a fixer upper home.
My parents said that immigrating can be difficult, for many reasons, for example my parents moved only with suitcase, which we were living out of. They had to get used to a new system.
I was 3 months old; my brother was 21 months old. My parents knew some people within Canada prior to moving who helped us the best they could. My parents had to buy things from charity shops. Some items were given from those who we knew. My parents said it was hard to get around without a vehicle at the time, and it was definitely a struggle since we moved at the end of November in the winter months. My mother who is a Mental Health Nurse said she wasn’t able to start working, because she needed to do some other education within Ontario to be able to work as a nurse.
My parents told me that change and adapting can be difficult when immigrating. It is important as a newcomer to be able to have access to affordable homes, not just newcomers but for all in need. Having affordable housing will help ease one problem when immigrating.
